America’s solitaire map: where the US searches for solitaire most (2026)
I ranked every US state by how much it searches Google for the card game solitaire over the past 12 months (21 Oct 2025 – 21 Oct 2026). Vermont comes out on top, and the whole top 10 sits in the North.
Key findings
- Vermont is America’s solitaire capital (100). Next come Maine (93), Wisconsin (90), New Hampshire and Nebraska (89), South Dakota (88), Iowa (86), North Dakota (83), Minnesota (81) and Montana (80).
- A northern solitaire belt. All ten leaders are in New England, the Upper Midwest or the Northern Plains. The lowest scores are Hawaii (37), Texas (41), California (43), Georgia and Nevada (47).
- Wisconsin has three of the top six TV markets: Wausau–Rhinelander (93), Green Bay–Appleton (88) and Madison (88). Lincoln & Hastings-Kearney, Nebraska, is #1 (100).
- Spider is America’s solitaire. Of the named variants, Spider is the most searched in 50 of 51 states (including DC; in Nevada it ties with FreeCell); New Hampshire alone prefers FreeCell.
- Summer slump. Over five years, solitaire searches run about 10% below average in June and July and peak from late winter to spring.

Equal scores share a rank. Metro areas are the TV markets (DMAs) Google Trends reports, under Google’s names.
Method
- Google Trends, United States, 21 Oct 2025 – 21 Oct 2026.
- Scores are relative search interest. Each place’s share of its own Google searches is scaled so the top place equals 100, which means small states can lead without having more searches.
- We used Google’s card-game topic for “Solitaire”, which leaves out searches for solitaire rings.
- The variant comparison uses the search terms “spider solitaire”, “freecell”, “klondike solitaire” and “pyramid solitaire” in one request.
- Seasonality uses five years of weekly data for the word “solitaire”.
Limits
- These figures show search interest, not the number of players.
- Differences under about 5 points are within normal sampling variation.
- Only English terms were measured.
