Solitaire for Everyone: Inclusive Design at VSolitaire
Card games shouldn't exclude anyone. VSolitaire is built with accessibility as a core feature-not an afterthought-ensuring players with visual, motor, or cognitive differences can enjoy competitive Klondike.
Here's how our accessibility features work and how to configure them for your needs.
Visual Accessibility Features
High Contrast Mode
Our high contrast theme increases the difference between card elements and backgrounds. Colors are chosen to remain distinguishable for users with various types of color vision deficiency.
| Standard | High Contrast |
|---|---|
| Red hearts/diamonds | Bright red with thick outlines |
| Black spades/clubs | Deep black on white background |
| Card backs | Solid color with distinct border |
Enable via: Settings → Display → High Contrast Mode
Colorblind-Friendly Card Designs
Standard playing cards rely heavily on red/black distinction. Our colorblind mode adds:
- Shape indicators: Hearts get a subtle curved underline; diamonds get corner dots
- Letter labels: "R" or "B" appears in corners for red/black suits
- Pattern fills: Optional pattern backgrounds differentiate suits without color
These modifications are designed to be subtle enough that they don't distract players who don't need them while remaining clear for those who do.
Scalable Interface
All game elements scale smoothly from 75% to 200% of default size:
- Cards enlarge while maintaining proportion
- Text remains crisp at all sizes
- Touch targets grow proportionally for motor accessibility
Adjust via: Settings → Display → Interface Scale
Screen Reader Support
VSolitaire works with popular screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver. Cards announce their value and suit when focused. Game state changes (cards moved, games won/lost) are announced automatically.
Motor Accessibility Features
Simplified Controls
For players with limited fine motor control, we offer:
Click-to-Select Mode: Instead of dragging, click a card to select it, then click the destination. This eliminates drag precision requirements.
Auto-Move Options: Enable automatic foundation moves so playable cards move themselves. Reduces total clicks required.
Extended Click Timing: Increase the window for double-clicks from 500ms to 2000ms for players who need more time.
Keyboard Navigation
Complete games without touching a mouse:
- Arrow keys: Navigate between cards and piles
- Enter/Space: Select or play the focused card
- Tab: Cycle between tableau, foundations, and stock
- Escape: Cancel current selection
Switch Access Compatibility
VSolitaire supports switch access systems for players who use adaptive controllers. Our interface responds to standard switch scanning patterns.
Cognitive Accessibility Features
Reduced Motion Mode
Animations can be distracting or disorienting. Reduced motion mode:
- Disables card movement animations
- Removes background effects
- Keeps essential feedback (success/error indicators) without motion
Hint System
Our hint system highlights legal moves when requested. For players who find move identification challenging, hints can auto-display after configurable idle periods.
Simplified Scoring
Optional simplified scoring shows only cards remaining versus cards in foundation-removing the mental load of tracking complex point calculations.
Session Memory
The game saves state automatically. Close the browser and return later to the exact same game position. No penalty for interruptions.
Configuring Your Experience
Quick Setup Wizard
First-time visitors can use our accessibility wizard:
- Select any conditions that apply (visual, motor, cognitive, or none)

- Ctrl+K: Show keyboard shortcut reference
Accessibility Standards Compliance
VSolitaire targets WCAG 2.1 AA compliance:
| Criterion | Status |
|---|---|
| Text contrast ratios (4.5:1 minimum) | Compliant |
| Keyboard accessibility | Full support |
| Screen reader compatibility | Tested with major readers |
| Seizure-safe animations | No flashing content |
| Timing adjustable | All time limits configurable |
We conduct regular accessibility audits and welcome feedback on areas needing improvement.
Accessibility in Competitive Play
Accessibility features are permitted in all game modes, including ranked matches and tournaments. Using colorblind mode or keyboard navigation provides no competitive advantage-these features level the playing field, not tilt it.
Tournament accommodations are available for players requiring additional support. Contact support before tournament registration to discuss specific needs.
Feedback and Requests
Accessibility is an ongoing process. If you encounter barriers or have suggestions:
- In-app: Settings → Accessibility → Send Feedback
- Email: [email protected]
- Community: Post in our Discord #accessibility channel
We prioritize accessibility requests in our development roadmap. Features like switch access support and extended screen reader announcements came directly from user feedback.
Play Your Way
VSolitaire believes competitive card gaming should welcome everyone. Whether you need high contrast cards, keyboard controls, or simplified scoring, our accessibility features ensure you can focus on the game-not on fighting the interface.
